چکیده

A dichotomy exists between rates of nitrogen fixation directly measured by biological techniques, and rates inferred from the geochemical distributions of excess nitrate within the thermocline of the North Atlantic Ocean. Part of the dichotomy relates to the temporal and spatial uncoupling between the event (i.e., nitrogen fixation by diazotrophs) and signal (i.e., excess nitrate (DINxs) in the thermocline), as well as the interannual variability of both. Here, temporal variability of excess nitrate in the subtropical mode water (STMW) of the North Atlantic Ocean is evaluated for the 1988–2001 period. The excess nitrate signal has a maximum in this water mass, and it is by far the largest volumetric component of thermocline waters in the subtropical gyre. DINxs variability and excess nitrate production rates in the STMW layer were well correlated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). For example, DINxs values (f1.5–2.8 Amol kg ) and excess nitrate production rates (f3.7 Tg N year ) were generally high during positive phases of the NAO (e.g., 1989–1994; 1997–2000) and coincident with periods of higher atmospheric mineral dust input to the ocean. When the NAO was in its negative phase and dust inputs lower (e.g., 1995–1996; 2001), DINxs values (f0–1.0 Amol kg ) and excess nitrate production rates were generally low (up to f0.6 Tg N year ). The NAO potentially influences DINxs variability by modulating the extent and magnitude of STMW formation, thereby changing the fate of accumulated DINxs during circulation of STMW in the subtropical gyre, and the variability of nitrogen fixers through changes in dust inputs to the subtropical gyre. Nitrous oxide in the North Atlantic Ocean

In order to get a comprehensive picture of the distribution of nitrous oxide (N2O) in the North Atlantic Ocean, measurements of dissolved nitrous oxide were made during three cruises in the tropical, subtropical and coldtemperate North Atlantic Ocean in October/November 2002, March/April 2004, and May 2002, respectively. To account for the history of atmospheric N2O, we suggest a new depthdepen...

Stochastically Forced Mode Water Variability

Substantial interannual to decadal variability is observed in the properties of subtropical mode water of the North Atlantic. In this study the response of mode water to stochastic atmospheric forcing is investigated in a numerical model. In a series of experiments the response is studied to different components of stochastic atmospheric forcing, such as wind stress, freshwater flux, and heat f...

Excess nitrate and nitrogen fixation in the North Atlantic Ocean

The process of nitrogen fixation in the subtropical North Atlantic has received considerable study over the last few decades. The findings have highlighted a large discrepancy in estimates for the locations and rates of nitrogen fixation when results from biological techniques are compared to geochemical techniques. Here, we evaluated the distribution and rates of excess nitrate development in ...

North Atlantic circulation and variability, reviewed for the CNLS conference

The circulation and water mass structure of the North Atlantic are reviewed, with emphasis on the large-scale overturning cell which produces North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW). Properties and transports for its major components (Nordic Seas Overflow Water, Labrador Sea Water, Mediterranean Water, Antarctic Intermediate Water and Antarctic Bottom Water) are reviewed. The transport estimates and p...
